A Milford woman has been indicted for allegedly pretending to be a federal agent to scam a West Michigan woman out of $60,000 last month, officials said.
Kari Melissa Morales, 51, was charged Tuesday by a federal grand jury with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten said in a statement.
"Financial fraud is rampant," Totten said. "Fraudsters come at us through our devices, in the mail, and at our doors. And they target some of our most vulnerable, especially senior citizens."
According to the indictment, Morales was part of a conspiracy that tried to bilk a Kent County woman out of $60,000 in April by threatening her with a phony federal arrest warrant for tax fraud.
