Scam Alert: Scammers spoofing city departments for "application approval fees"
KOAT - NM
GALLUP, N.M. —
The city of Gallup has issued a public warning following reports of a scam email falsely claiming to be from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. The fraudulent message attempts to collect “application approval fees” for zoning map amendments, raising alarms among local residents.
City officials say that this email is not legitimate and is part of a broader scam designed to trick recipients into making unauthorized payments.
Key red flags include unexpected payment requests, high-pressure language urging immediate action and demands for emailed payment receipts. Additionally, scammers often mask their identities using email addresses that closely resemble but do not match official city domains.
